Can you see the difference?
Does it seem your trees or shrubs are just not living up to their full potential even though you might be fertilizing them?
About 95% of the time I’m noticing that the trees and shrubs are either planted too deep or over mulched.

Here is an example of what I found while working on a apple tree recently. The tree has been growing and producing apples. But it wasn’t really living up to it’s full potential. So I did a little checking and this is what I found.
Planting a tree or shrub too deep, over mulching is basically strangling the tree. The root system takes in oxygen and if it is buried under even an extra inch you are putting your tree into a bad situation. A slow death or just not able to live up to it’s full potential.
Always look for the root flare. This is where the tree trunk starts to widen out and the roots start. If you mulch around your trees and shrubs always becareful not to make it look like this. Don’t allow your landscaper to do this to your trees. You put a lot of money into making your home look good, make sure it’s being cared for the right way.

In the winter months we normally don’t think about pruning trees. But this is one of the best times to prune. A few reasons why are listed below. If your trees are in need of this service please contact me.
1. Better growth response- pruning while the tree is dormant allows the tree to direct it’s sap to the proper branches come springtime.
2. Disease management- pruning during the winter months reduces the chance of spreading diseases through the pruning cuts.
3. Visible branches- winter pruning allows me to view of the branches without the leaves blocking my view. This allows me to make better decisions when selecting which branches to remove.
Aeration can be a huge boost to a healthy lawn because it allows air and water to penetrate built-up grass or lawn thatch. Aeration is perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots. This helps the roots grow deeply and produce a healthier lawn.

One of the main reasons for aerating is to alleviate soil compaction. Compacted soils are usually high traffic areas where the soil has become compressed, which prevents proper circulation of air, water and nutrients within the soil. Excess lawn thatch or heavy organic debris buried under the grass surface can also starve the roots from these essential elements.
Aeration is a excellent way to boost the look of your lawn or your clients lawn.

By treating your lawn with a safe organic treatment you and your family can have peace of mind knowing you’re protecting the environment and safe from unwanted pests.
In Connecticut, the two most common ticks are the blacklegged tick also known as the deer tick, and the American dog tick. Residential areas with wooded areas have the increased the potential for contact with wildlife and their ticks. You can reduce the number of ticks near your home by landscaping changes, manipulating or treating tick hosts, and the selective application of least-toxic pesticides. Most people acquire Lyme disease from the nymphal stage of the tick, which is active during late spring and summer. Therefore, most control efforts are targeted towards the nymphal stage. Adult ticks are active in the fall, warm days of winter, and spring.
If you’re in need of tick control please feel free to contact me.

Grapes should be pruned while dormant. When it comes to pruning grapes, the most common mistake people make is not pruning hard enough. Light pruning doesn’t promote adequate fruiting whereas heavy pruning provides the greatest quality of grapes. Improper pruning of grapevines can make the difference between a good crop and a bad one. When pruning grapes, you’ll want to cut off as much of the old wood as possible. This will encourage the growth of new wood, which is where the fruit is produced.

The disease pictured above has two names. Pink snow mold is the name used to when it appears after the snow melts. Microdochium patch is used when it appears without snow cover.
It normally surfaces in the cool, wet weather of October through April.
If at all possible, try to avoid piling up snow when clearing snow from driveways or sidewalks.

With my organic tick treatments you can help reduce and repel then from your property. If you’re interested in protecting your family please contact me.
